WUEIC consists of 14 university administrators whose leadership positions include service on the council’s executive committee, 24 appointed members at large representing the university’s seven schools, and 10 members at large selected by the governance committee via a nomination or application process. Membership terms for all but the 14 administrators have designated year limits, with options for renewal.
WUEIC’s work aligns with the school year calendar. Members begin and end their terms in August and recess during fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks.
The full council convenes once per fiscal quarter, or four times per year. These 90-minute meetings include community building, conceptual engagement, general updates, space for deliberations, and voting when necessary.
Members also serve on standing committees, which gather regularly between the full council meetings.
Executive Committee
Reviews the work of the other committees, reporting to the chancellor and Washington University’s Board of Trustees
Accountability and Measurement Committee
Designs systems to measure process related to advancing equity and inclusion across the university
Communications, Storytelling, and Reporting Committee
Synthesizes themes and frames the narrative around the council’s work. The council will communicate its work in three formats:
- Reporting: formal, designed written documents presented to community constituents for review and feedback
- Storytelling: community stories that enhance connection and understanding
- Communications: outreach and engagement opportunities that create opportunities for listening, dialogue, and information exchange between council members and other community members
Governance Committee
Oversees WUEIC’s budget (initial seed funding of $500,000), member selection, and periodic reevaluation of the charter, among other governance issues
In the council’s inaugural year, members conducted significant organizational development research to establish equitable and transparent decision-making processes, which are meant to be periodically reevaluated as part of the charter review.
Student Liaison Committee
Raises student-focused concerns related to equity and inclusion
The Student Liaison Committee is open to all Council members who are enrolled in
the university as students. This group should function as a caucus group of student
representatives to discuss student-focused concerns related to equity and inclusion.
Working groups are the engines of the council’s work, carrying out specific projects determined by their respective standing committees. They include opt-in council members as well as various subject matter experts across the university.
